4WD Wheel Sizing Guide: PCD, Offset & Width Explained for Australian Vehicles

Understanding 4WD Wheel Specifications in Australia

Choosing the right wheels for your 4WD or ute can be confusing with so many specifications to understand. This guide explains everything you need to know about PCD, offset, width, and diameter to help you make the right choice for your Australian vehicle.

What is PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter)?

PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter – it's the diameter of an imaginary circle drawn through the centre of each wheel bolt hole. In Australia, the most common 4WD PCDs are:

  • 6x139.7 – Toyota Hilux, LandCruiser 70/200/300 Series, Nissan Patrol Y61/Y62, Mitsubishi Triton
  • 6x114.3 – Nissan Navara, Toyota Fortuner, some Japanese SUVs
  • 5x150 – Toyota LandCruiser 100/200 Series (5-bolt variants)
  • 8x165.1 – Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra (American trucks)
  • 8x170 – Ford F-250, Ford F-350 Super Duty

Always match the PCD exactly to your vehicle's specifications. An incorrect PCD will prevent wheel installation.

Understanding Wheel Offset

Offset determines how far in or out the wheel sits relative to the wheel hub. It's measured in millimetres:

  • Positive offset (+) – The wheel hub mounting surface is towards the outside of the wheel. The wheel sits further inward (closer to the vehicle).
  • Zero offset (0) – The hub mounting surface is at the centreline of the wheel.
  • Negative offset (-) – The mounting surface is towards the inside of the wheel. The wheel sits further outward, creating a more aggressive stance.

For Australian 4WDs running larger tyres, a negative offset (typically -12 to -44mm) is common to provide adequate clearance for suspension components and body panels.

Wheel Width: Matching to Your Tyre

Wheel width should be matched to your intended tyre size. General guidelines for Australian off-road setups:

  • 7" wheels – Suitable for tyres up to 255mm width
  • 8" wheels – Ideal for 265mm to 285mm tyres (most common for Hilux and Navara)
  • 9" wheels – For 295mm to 315mm tyres (LandCruiser, Patrol)
  • 10" wheels – Wide tyres 315mm+ for competition builds

Wheel Diameter: The Right Size for Australia

Australian 4WD enthusiasts typically choose between:

  • 16" wheels – Maximum sidewall height for off-road cushioning, excellent for rocky terrain
  • 17" wheels – Best balance of sidewall height and tyre selection (most popular choice)
  • 18" wheels – Lower profile look, more rim exposure, suited to dual-purpose builds

Hub-Centric vs Lug-Centric Wheels

Hub-centric wheels feature a centre bore machined to exactly match your vehicle's hub diameter. This is critically important for:

  • Eliminating wheel vibration at highway speeds
  • Correct wheel centring for even load distribution
  • Preventing wheel wobble when bolted on

All Reika wheels are hub-centric, meaning they're precision-machined to fit specific Australian vehicles including Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, and more.

TPMS Compatibility

Modern Australian 4WDs (post-2015) often come with Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors. When upgrading wheels, it's important to ensure the new wheels are TPMS-compatible, with adequate clearance for the sensor valves. All Reika wheels are designed with TPMS compatibility in mind.
