State-by-state legal limits for Australian 4WDs and vans

Check whether your proposed tyre upsize is legal in your state under VSB14, the relevant state code, or the Heavy Vehicle National Law. Pick from popular brands or enter manually. Load index and speed rating are optional.

How The Limits Work

— 01

Light Vehicles (≤4.49t GVM)

Off-road passenger 4WDs and light commercials follow VSB14 and the relevant state code. Most states allow a +50mm overall tyre diameter increase from the placard's largest listed size without engineering certification. NSW additionally caps at 7% rolling diameter increase, whichever limit binds first.

— 02

Heavy Vehicles (4.5t+ GVM)

Vehicles at or above 4.5t GVM fall under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), administered by the NHVR — except WA and NT which run their own frameworks. There is no +50mm allowance. Tyre load capacity must equal or exceed manufacturer GVM across all axles, and changes generally require engineering certification.

— 03

Where To Find Load & Speed

On the tyre sidewall, the size is followed by two markings — e.g. "245/75R16 121R". The number is the load index (121 = 1450 kg per tyre). The letter is the speed rating (R = 170 km/h). Both are also listed on the placard inside the driver's door jamb.

— 04

Compliance Requirements

Replacement tyres must meet or exceed the placard load index. Speed rating must be at least 'N' (140 km/h) for vehicles with off-road designation. All tyres must be road-rated. ESC recalibration may be required after diameter changes.

Important — Read Before Fitting

This calculator provides general guidance only and is not legal, regulatory, or engineering advice. Tyre database is curated from manufacturer published specs and may not reflect current product changes. Rules change and state interpretations vary. Always verify your specific fitment with your state transport authority, VSB14, the applicable state code (NSW LVMM, QLD QCoP, VIC VSI, etc), the tyre manufacturer's current datasheet, and a licensed automotive engineer (VASS, Mod Plate, Blue Plate, or equivalent) before purchase or fitment. REIKA Wheels Australia and Burrell Engineering Pty Ltd accept no liability for compliance decisions made on the basis of this tool.
